Fléville possesses without a doubt one of the most beautiful agricultural and landscaped parks of the 19th century. It is the work of Paul de Lavenne, count de Choulot.
Choulot designed 280 parks in France and abroad, 14 of which to be found in Lorraine. Only Fléville remains in its original state, retaining all of the charm of Choulot's creations.
With Fléville, he wanted to create a romantic park, shaping it on top of the 18th century gardens designed by Gervais, himself inspired by Lenôtre, on the top of the 17th century parks, albeit without destroying the original creations. We can indeed easily discover their layout and lines in the garden, and it would be a simple task to revive the old features.
In developing the plans for the Fleville park, the genius of Choulot was to respect the spatial proportions while displaying the castle in the best possible light. The large lawn to the back of the estate therefore generously allows the owner to view it as a meadow, or to consider such a mass of light bordered with vegetation a convivial area well-suited to galas and celebrations.
Every facet of the art of creating a garden is on show in Fléville : the grand perspectives, the wells of light, the clever tricks of rises and descents, the sumptuous paths, the serpentines, the water mirrors, the coppices and clusters, the labyrinth and the hermitage, not forgertting the island and its charming Art Nouveau bridge.
All the sensibility of the 19th century is present in the Fléville park, a dsitinctive beauty and originality that 20th has recognised in classifying this area a Historic Monument.
